What do I need to know before I start?

Three things: the command line (a black screen where you type instead of click -- you need maybe 3-4 commands), file paths (just the address of where your files are on your computer, like C:\Users\Documents\Invoices), and markdown (a text file with a few formatting characters -- a hash makes a heading, two stars make bold). If you can handle those three, you can run AI agents.

Then pick a folder of your work, back it up, and start asking questions -- what's in these spreadsheets, what's the average in column three. Feed it your old proposals and tell it to extract your writing style. Then give it a real request and watch it produce a finished document in two minutes.

Do I need to be technical?

No. I'm a developer, but I'm also a product creator. Product creators take complicated problems and make them simple. Claude Code is an incredible engine -- I wrap it in something that makes it drivable for people who aren't mechanics. The Director, the tools, the pre-built skills -- that's the chassis. You don't need to be a mechanic to drive a car.

The tools are free. Claude Max is $100 a month. That's it. We recently translated 350 website pages into seven languages for just under $18. Three years ago that would have cost $2,000 to $5,000 per language and taken two weeks. We did it overnight.

But it hallucinates -- how can I trust it?

Accepted Answer

Hire a new employee and tell me they never hallucinate. You accept human flaws every day. The best test: give the AI a task you already know how to do. Compare the results. You can also put guardrails around it -- tell it to prove its claims, show sources. And here's the thing nobody wants to hear: when the AI gets it wrong, most of the time it's because you didn't tell it properly. We're terrible at giving clear instructions.

What about privacy?

Where do you store your documents? Google Docs or OneDrive. You've already given all your data to Google or Microsoft. Every document, every spreadsheet, every email. If you trust Google, you trust OpenAI. If you trust Microsoft, you trust Anthropic. The privacy concern people have about AI specifically -- while their entire business lives on someone else's cloud -- doesn't hold up.

AI writing is generic garbage though.

If you say "write me a proposal," you'll get generic output. You gave it nothing to work with. The fix: set up a writing style first. Give it 20 of your old proposals. Tell it: write like this. It will write exactly like you -- spelling habits, sentence structure, everything. You do this once. Then every document comes out in your voice. Forever.

Which AI tool should I pick?

People spend weeks comparing tools and while they're comparing, they're using none of them. That's like walking 100 kilometers because you can't decide between a Ford, a Volvo, and a Tesla. Pick one. Any of them is better than doing everything manually. I pick Claude Code because Anthropic's output is polished, business-ready, professional. If you disagree, pick another one. Just stop walking.

I don't have time for this.

If you spend 50% of your time in a browser or application, all of that can be automated. AI won't solve your 60-hour problem -- you'll probably still work 60 hours. But you'll do three or four or ten times as much in those hours. Your output triples. Your impact multiplies.

What is the Director?

It started because I couldn't email a PDF from Claude. So I built a tool. Then another. Now I have almost 30. The Director is an application that runs as many Claude Code sessions as your computer can handle, organized with names, colors, and workspaces. Marketing in one workspace, finance in another. It also includes a vault for your contacts and writing style, a communications manager for email approval, and remote access via Teams.

What are skills and tools?

A skill is a set of instructions telling the AI how to do something -- like McDonald's standard operating procedures. A tool is the thing that does the actual work -- the hammer. Claude Code doesn't know how to create an Excel spreadsheet on its own, so it writes Python on the fly. Give it a pre-built tool and it's faster. Great tools with bad skills? That's a gorilla driving a Ferrari.

What about Mac?

The Director was built for Windows because that's what most business computers run and what I know. Ninety percent of what I've built ports to Mac, but there are core things that aren't easy to move yet. If you want to join the community right now, you need Windows. For Mac users, embracing the ugly includes embracing Windows. We'll get there.

You're selling picks and shovels in a gold rush.

Your partner is 100% correct -- my tools will probably be obsolete in six months. But in six months, my tools will look totally different. The value isn't the tools. The value is 12 months of experience figuring out where the lines are, what works, what doesn't. You can download every tool for free. The course is the 12 months compressed into two days.

What happens when it breaks?

Claude Code has never deleted something that was not my fault. What it does is waste my time going in circles. The other day we spent four and a half hours trying to fix something. Finally I said: start over from scratch. It picked a different approach and everything worked. That happens every week. I do three months of work in a week, then lose half a day. The ratio is still overwhelmingly positive.

Is it safe to run with permissions off?

I run Claude Code with all permissions turned off. Anthropic is a security-focused company and the agents know what's safe. Start with a separate folder. Give the AI access to just that folder. When you're comfortable, expand. Eventually you end up like me -- it has access to OneDrive, email, calendar. But I still read every single email that goes out. Most things are two-way doors -- if a spreadsheet gets messed up, you're losing 5 minutes, not 30 hours.

Will AI make us dumber?

That's like saying GPS made us dumber because nobody can read a map. If you're under 30, you've probably never held a map. You're not dumber -- you just have different skills. Half my brain is full of Monty Python sketches. There's a limited capacity for what you can store up there. Different times, different skills.

You didn't build any of this -- the AI did.

Have you heard Bill Burr's rant on Steve Jobs? He basically said: what did he do? He just told the engineers what to build. I didn't write the code, but I didn't build the compiler either. What I did: I had the vision, collected the pieces, and spent 12 months assembling things. If a house builder uses panels from a factory, are they still the builder? I assembled these tools and created a framework for what I think makes people more productive.

Your identity changes -- is that hard?

I've been programming since the late 1980s. Within a year of using AI agents, I no longer do what I trained to do my entire life. My skill went from being a creator and writer of code to being a manager of six to ten occasionally drunk PhD students. I played basketball my whole life at a high level. Knee injury ended it. Started freediving instead. Now I don't miss basketball at all. Things change. You become something different. I haven't written a line of code in six months. I don't miss it.

I hear you. I never got the CrossFit thing either. But I always admired them. A friend says: pick a thing and lean in. Right now 60 million people are yelling about AI in the void. I'm one of them.
